Weekly Overview 08.07.17

Outside My Window…  sunshine and white fluffy clouds filtered through my Texas Star hibiscus.

I am thinking… about how nice it was to have a phone call from my Mom this morning and a Skype call from Kat & Fiona this afternoon.

I am thankful for… the availability of so much beautiful Celtic music via the Internet.

I am hoping…  the a/c installation into the garage tomorrow goes smoothly.  Sounds like a repeat from last week, doesn’t it?  That’s because last week’s scheduled date got moved to this week!

 I am reading…

I am busy creating… plants.  I’m propagating geraniums, or attempting to do so.  Trimmed my peppermint striped geranium this morning and I have six potential plants started.  Keeping my fingers crossed, as I’ve never done geraniums before, nor have I used rooting compound before.

I am hearing… Celtic music from Seinn, by Mary Jane Lamond & Wendy Macisaac.  I first heard them on the Celtic Music Podcast and liked the piece played so well that I looked on the liner notes to see who and what it was.  Their album is a mixture of fiddling instrumentals and vocals in Gaelic.  They have some samples on their website that I’m listening to and when I make my next mini-weight loss goal, I will be ordering the CD.

Around the house…  not much is happening, as most of my attention has been outside.  I realized Saturday, when I went hunting for my brochures and maps of things to do and see in Oklahoma, that I need a system to organize such things.  I always collect brochures and maps wherever I go, and then they get thrown in a pile when I get home.  I’m thinking of those cloth bins that I can shove onto a shelf…but that would mean I need open and available shelves.  The other option is a plastic tote with hanging folders inside.  I’ll have to decide upon something soon, as right now there’s piles on a couple of different tables and if I don’t deal with them, they’ll be there for weeks, maybe even months!

Around the garden… spider mites and mealy bugs to be dealt with on outside and inside plants. This morning I sprayed tomatoes and other plants outside with Neem oil.  And I will be spending Wednesday launching an all-out attack on my inside African violets – wiping down with alcohol to remove mealy bugs, then spraying with Neem oil and rinsing with water, and repotting in new soil mixed with diatomaceous earth.  It’s time to get serious!

In other news…  I’m still using webmail, which sucks.  Bill is still working on getting our mail server system back in shape.  From what I can figure, it’s got more to do with the actual program than the system, something about overloading the backup or archival to the point where it just quit.  I sure hope this doesn’t last forever, as I really miss Outlook mail (I never thought I’d say that!).

One of my favorite things…  day trips to new places.  Here’s a picture from the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma, which we visited Saturday.

Our Weekly Overview…

Karen:  No Master Gardener meetings this week.  A/C contractor(s) here on Tuesday morning to set up the mini-split unit in the garage and also (hopefully) do an air flow test in the house to remediate some residual issues from the house system that was installed in April.  The rest of the week will be ongoing focus on paperwork and accounts and Quicken.

Bill: Bill will be working from home every day this week except Wednesday (which means I have the house to myself for a whole day!!!).

David: David works every day this week, except for Thursday and Friday.  He’ll be ready for a break, as he’ll be ending a seven day work week, covering for others on vacation.

Weekly Overview 02.06.17

This is what you do when you leave your first Master Gardener Class – you buy more plants!

Outside My Window… it is overcast and dreary.  Dandelions are blooming in my front yard, but otherwise, it looks like winter.

I am thinking… that it’s looking like a typical Monday, with things piling on faster than I can keep track.  I had hoped to make a Master Gardener Garden Tour meeting this afternoon, just to check it out, but that is not going to happen.  Alysse has work for me and I still have homework to read for tomorrow’s class.

I am thankful for… the end of feeling like crap.  My cold is mostly gone.

From the kitchen… nothing.  I’ve got nothing.

I am hoping… to get my MG homework finished today.  Reading forty-four pages of plant parts and plant propagation while having a foggy head from this cold has been a challenge.

I am reading… The Immortal Irishman: The Irish Revolutionary Who Became an American Hero by Timothy Egan (for the 2017 European Reading Challenge), Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout for the 100 Books List challenge, and The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America, 1858-1919 by Douglas Brinkley.

I am busy creating… a counted cross stitch Santa piece, although I haven’t done any work on it in over three weeks.  I am feeling the urge to crochet, though, so I may put that away for a while and find a crochet project to work on.

I am hearing… Celtic music from the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast.

Around the house & garden… Christmas décor is still up. The house needs a good cleaning, but I didn’t do anything this weekend, other than the most pressing (food, dishes, laundry) and resting.  I noticed I have morning glories starting (self-seeded) and my daffodils are up, but otherwise, the garden looks like winter.  Inside, my plants need a lot of attention – repotting, cleaning up dead leaves and such, and I noticed yesterday that I have mealy bugs on another African violet.  It seems like there’s one area where I put plants that they always get mealy bugs, so I’ve got to figure out what is going on there.

In other news…  I took Bill back to the doctor’s Friday for more antibiotics and some couch meds.  After a full weekend of resting, he sounds a bit better today and is back to work.

One of my favorite things… having enough money to pay all the bills and some left over to put into savings.

Our Weekly Overview…

Monday: Bill working from home.  David is at work.  I have work for Alysse, along with MG homework to finish.  I’d like to get the upstairs bedroom dusted & vacuumed – I think it would help cure our colds if I got some of the dust cleaned up in the house.

Tuesday: Bill works from home.  David is off work.  I’ll be at my Master Gardener class from 9 – 4.

Wednesday: Bill works from home.  David is off work (but probably has a Manager’s meeting to attend at noon).  I have a MG Volunteer Fair to attend sometimes between 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.  The rest of the day I probably will have work for Alysse and if not, there’s the ever present Quicken.

Thursday: Bill works from home.  David is at work.  I’ve got Quicken to get caught up so I can do taxes this month, and I’ll have more MG homework.

Friday: Bill works from home.  David is at work.  I’ll have Quicken still and hopefully will chat with old-time homeschool friends.

SaturdaySunday:  David works.  Bill & I need to do some outside things, if the weather is nice.  The pool desperately needs cleaning and we need to hook up the water hoses and water the house foundation.

Here are some picture thoughts I am sharing …

Just a bit of what I’ve been studying this week.

Weekly Review 01.23.17

Outside My Window… I can see the hotel swimming pool, since I am sitting in the breakfast area.  It’s a lovely pool, but it’s been far too cold and rainy to be able to sit out there.  This week is supposed to be warmer, so maybe….

I am thinking… that I would have enjoyed my two-week stay here if not for a series of events that have caused aggravation and frustration.  We had to move to another room on Wednesday when we woke up to a leaking ceiling.  The refrigerator in the old room and then the one in the new room froze my greens two different times.  And the new room has no wifi or hardwired Internet – I had the pleasure of troubleshooting over the phone with the hotel’s IT company and helped them diagnose 2 separate issues – both of which I have been assured will be fixed today (Monday).  We shall see.  I could request moving to another room, and may do so if the Internet issues are not fixed. That said, the jacuzzi has been very nice.

I am thankful for…  the promise of sunshine this week!  I want to be able to get outside, do some walking, maybe a little sightseeing.  With all the rain and flooding last week, I’m feeling a bit housebound, or rather, hotelbound.

From the kitchen… I’m hearing the restocking of the hotel kitchen, vacuuming of hallways, hums of refrigerators and coolers, and the tick, tick, tick of the wall clock here in the breakfast area.

I am hoping… that I can be productive this week (working on blogs) and also take a day to visit the Houston Museum of Fine Art.

I am reading… The Immortal Irishman, by Timothy Egan (for the 2017 European Reading Challenge) – but this was left home, so I won’t be reading it for the next week.  The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larrson, which is the second of a trilogy.

I am busy creating… a counted cross stitch Santa piece.  I  brought it with me, but haven’t worked on it at all as the lighting in the hotel room isn’t bright enough.

I am hearing… Scottish music from the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast.

Around the house & garden… Christmas décor is still up. David is in charge of the house while we’re gone.

In other news…  Bill still has a lingering cough, but otherwise is well.  He was sicker than I’ve seen him in several years and I’m very glad I didn’t get it.

One of my favorite things… Celtic music.  I am really enjoying the bluetooth device Bill bought me for Christmas, and using it frequently for listening to music podcasts while I work.

Our Weekly Overview…

Monday: Bill working with the Houston client.  I’m hanging out at the hotel – I’m going to run to Whole Foods for lunch and maybe buy lunch supplies.  That hasn’t worked out well and I’m not sure I want to chance it again, especially if I decide to move to another room.  David is working today.

Tuesday: Bill works with the Houston client.  I’ll hang out at the hotel, hopefully get in a walk, write a book review, and begin to work on blogs.  David is off work.

Wednesday: Bill works with the Houston client.  I think I’ll try to visit the art museum on Wednesday, as it’s supposed to be colder, but sunny.  David is off work.

Thursday: Bill works with the Houston client.  I’ll hang out at the hotel, walk, and continue working on blogs.  David has work today.

Friday: Bill works with the Houston client.  I’m not sure yet if we’re leaving Friday night or Saturday.  If Friday, then I’ll have to pack up the room in the morning and find somewhere to hang out the erst of the day.  If Saturday, then I’ll keep busy doing other things.  David has work.

SaturdaySunday:  David works.  Bill & I will be heading home (the plan is tentatively to head for home on Saturday, unless Bill finishes up with the client early).  Once home, I’ll have laundry to do, groceries to get, unpacking to do, and I know Copper will need a good bit of attention.

Here are some picture thoughts I am sharing … no picture thoughts this week.  Sorry.
