Weekly Overview March 10, 2014

A geranium that survived the winter.

Outside My Window… I have a geranium that survived the winter.

I am thinking… that I really should have eaten more sensibly last night when we went out to dinner.

I am thankful for…

From the kitchen… the dishes are piled up while potatoes and spaghetti squash await baking.

I am hoping… I hardly dare hope what I’m hoping.

I am reading… The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, An American Saga by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

I am busy creating… cross stitching on Liana’s birthday blanket.

I am hearing… It Might Be You by Stephen Bishop on my Barry Manilow Pandora station, the floor fan running to keep me cool, and the house air conditioning unit.

Around the house & garden… I already tackled the Monday vacuuming, litter box cleaning and trash removal so I’m all ready for the trash pickup tomorrow. Last week I cleaned up about half of the backyard from last fall’s growing season; I plan to get the rest cleaned up sometime this week and hopefully tackle some more of the front yard. Today marks 7 days scorpion free, both inside and in the garage!

In other news… I bought daffodils and tulips last Thursday. I have three bouquets scattered about the house. Well worth the $14.00 I paid! Bill and I went out to dinner with friends last night (new restaurant, no plant-based entrees) and then back to their house to play cards for a bit. We had a good time.

Daffodils and Tulips

One of my favorite things… cut flowers.

Weekly Overview… No appointments this week, so just the usual mid-week grocery run will probably be my only venture out the door. This week is tax week and cross-stitch week. We have TurboTax downloaded and the Quicken files transferred, so now it is just sitting down and actually doing it.

Liana’s blanket is coming along nicely. There are three poles of carousel horses – I have one pole completely done and two-thirds of the second completed. I worked another two hours on it this morning. I really do need to block Kat’s purple shawl yet; maybe I can fit that in sometime this week.

Just A Moment – Twenty-Three

Friday ritual inspired by other blogs. A single photo from this past week…. few to no words…. just a moment captured in time. If you feel inspired to share…. leave a link in the comments with your moment.

Scorpions stuck to the sticky boards.

Scorpions have definitely defined my week. Pest control came Monday and sprayed inside and out. We had a long talk about scorpions, this house and yard, and my intense dislike of said critters. I just wish the scorpions had listened. Wednesday evening these two were stuck to the sticky pads in the garage at the entrance to the house. Thursday morning another one appeared sometime between my coming home from taking Bill to work and my leaving again three hours later to go get groceries. More sticky pads will be put down in various places in the garage this weekend, I promise you!

Monday, Monday

Today is the first Monday in February. How can the year be 1/12th through already?

So far, I’ve been busy! I was up early to make Bill’s breakfast and pack up his lunch (most of which is prepped the night before) and I resisted the urge to crawl back in bed, even though a little more sleep would have been very welcome. Instead I worked on Kat’s second (purple) shawl a bit more while watching the news and started a crochet/bead necklace for Fiona for Valentine’s Day. I’m not really sure where that is going or how it will turn out, totally winging it. I’ll post the results, if they are worth posting!

The bulk of the morning was spent cleaning up the weekend’s mail, logging in receipts from the weekend into my spreadsheet (not into Quicken) and catching up on email. Also I spent time planning various schedules to possibly implement February. I used to have a weekly/monthly cleaning schedule and I really want to get back to that, so I spent some time making lists of the chores that I already do and the days of the week that work best for doing them. For example, Tuesday is trash pickup day, so on Monday I usually try to gather up all the trash in the various rooms, run the vacuum cleaner in all the rooms and clean out the litter box. There’s just no sense in scheduling that on any day other than Monday! The schedule needs a lot of fine tuning, but I’m getting there.

I also spent some time this morning making notes and lists on how to better schedule my blog posts. I had a nice conversation with Missus Wookie on Friday about how she keeps up to date with her blog and I will be implementing some of her suggestions throughout the month. Stay tuned!

The rest of the week will be spent in getting Quicken caught up. I did work a good bit on it last week, so I should be able to finish it up this week. Then I’m going to try using Quicken as the primary entry method and see if I can let my spreadsheets go by the wayside by the end of 2014. It is crazy to continue duplicating efforts!

I went for my morning walk at 11:30 and Brrr! It was cold out there! We had the warmest January on record, but February is definitely feeling more like winter.

Here’s something cheerful to end the post with:
